Scaffolding

| Defination

Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support workers and materials to aid in the construction, maintenance and repair at a height usually beyond the reach of normal ladders.  Hence, places where they are normally used are inside and outside of buildings as well as around any man-made structures like bridges, pipe racks or even tunnels.  Scaffolding may also be called scaffolds or staging in some countries. 

Besides providing a work platform for workers to work, it is also being used in for formwork and shoring at construction sites (heavy duty type), spectator stands, concert performance stages, viewing towers, rock climbing walls and even for display purposes.

| Components

Each type usually comprises of the following components:

• Base plate, Jack Base or Castor wheels (for mobile towers)
• Vertical components with joins or pins (eg. Standards)
• Horizontal components (eg. Ledgers, Guardrails)
• Platforms & Toeboards
• Ladders or Stairs
• Tiebacks including Props, Wall Ties with Anchor Bolts etc
• Brackets for Cantilever
• Special Components eg. Bridging Platforms, Trusses etc

| Purpose

The purpose of scaffolding is to provide a safe working platform for workers to carry out their work.  Hence, it is important that the scaffolds is erected by qualified workers according to local government regulations.  It is also necessary that the scaffolding be inspected regularly (eg. weekly) to ensure that they are still safe for use and are not modified by any unauthorized personal).
